The decision for your team

Connect the conversation to the customer record.

  • Define one customer workflow that should become easier to complete.
  • Check the precise Microsoft experience, its availability and the information it needs.
  • Agree who reviews the result and how the next step returns to the working record.

Imagine an account team preparing for a renewal. The opportunity contains the commercial plan. A service case records an unresolved issue. A Teams conversation explains who promised to follow up. Before speaking with the customer, someone has to reconnect those parts of the story.

This illustrative situation shows why CRM in the flow of work is an interesting direction. The useful outcome is a better-prepared conversation and a clearer next step. The team needs an experience that helps it assemble the context, check the detail and act on what it learns.

What Microsoft has announced

Microsoft's 8 October 2026 announcement describes Dynamics 365 CRM in Teams as public preview. It also identifies Dynamics 365 skills in Cowork as generally available, with different access stages for the same skills in Autopilot and Code. These are distinct experiences to assess. See Microsoft's October announcement.

The Sales agent in Microsoft 365 Copilot also differs from Copilot built into Dynamics 365 Sales. Their integrations and capabilities should be considered separately when defining a pilot. Start with a precise product and task, then confirm availability, licence requirements, configuration and access in your own environment. Microsoft's product comparison explains the distinction.

Choose the customer workflow that should improve

For the renewal example, the first task might be meeting preparation and follow-up ownership. Define the briefing an account owner needs, which details could change the conversation and where those details live. Then agree what should happen after the team reviews the information. This creates an output and a process you can evaluate.

  1. Context: identify the customer, relevant records, commitments and sources.
  2. Assistance: prepare a briefing, draft or suggested next step that someone can check.
  3. Action: agree who decides, completes the follow-up and updates the record.

The customer record still needs to tell a dependable story

Microsoft's Dynamics 365 Sales guidance explains that record summaries use record and related information, with behaviour depending on configuration. Check the relationships and information behind the selected task. Where the team needs context from a separate source, establish how the experience can access it. Read Microsoft's record summary guidance.

Review a small sample with account owners. Distinguish a proposed date from a customer-confirmed date. Identify the service issue that affects the conversation and the person responsible for the response. If an important commitment is only in a chat, agree how it becomes part of the working record. Keep the first improvement focused on what this task needs.

Shared context needs a defined audience

A customer channel can bring together people with different responsibilities and system access. Define who should participate in the pilot, what they need to know and where the output will be shared. For a briefing, agree who checks the important facts. For an action, also agree what may change and how an exception reaches an owner.

Microsoft's Channel Agent documentation describes information access, sharing behaviour and preview limitations. Apply those details to the specific experience being evaluated; they are not a universal description of every Microsoft agent. Test representative users, missing information and conflicting facts. The Channel Agent setup guidance is one relevant reference.

Give the people behind the workflow clear responsibilities

The seller needs a useful briefing, the sales leader needs evidence of better work, the CRM manager needs a route for recurring information issues, and the technology owner needs an operating brief. Agree those responsibilities before the first users begin. Training can use the actual task: prepare, check an uncertain detail, correct a source and record the next step.

Measure the completed task and its review effort

Record a baseline for preparation effort and quality. During the pilot, include the time people spend checking and correcting the output. Review important omissions, usefulness before the customer conversation and whether follow-ups have an accountable owner. Keep the definitions and scope consistent so the comparison is useful.

Microsoft provides different reporting views for deployment, adoption and use. Select the reporting available to your environment and combine it with evidence from the sales task. Check whether a reporting tool fits the size and licensing of your pilot. A simple task log can be a useful starting point. See Microsoft's measurement and reporting guidance.

Use the first 30 days to make a concrete decision

A proposed approach is to begin with one task and a small group. Define the baseline and prepare the information in the first week. Test representative examples in the second. Use and review the task in the third. In the final week, decide whether to improve the pilot, extend its scope or choose another task. Adapt the pace to feature availability and your preparation work.
